Writing A Robust Little Parser in Swift –Part 3

ABSTRACT

In the previous post, we established a “black box” function signature for our parser, and set up a bunch of tests.

Now, we need to figure out what goes into that black box.

THE DESCENT

Since the data can be located inside a single-path tree structure, a Recursive-Descent Parser looks like a good bet.

Recursive-Descent Parsers are a venerable and robust way to reduce lines of code, and provide a way to navigate unlimited depth context trees.

We’ll just put a wee little Swift spin on the eight ball…

Yeah…Yeah. I Know. I Know.

Yes. The RDP is NOT the most efficient algorithm for this kind of thing. It’s a completely linear method that hijacks the execution thread and fails miserably in highly parallel environments.

I chose it for exactly the same reason that folks choose simple “textbook” algorithms for training. It’s a well-known quantity, and, most importantly, can be expressed easily in a playground. If I were to choose a threaded approach, maybe using Dispatch Groups, it would not be as easy to demonstrate tests, and those tests would require things like XCTest Expectations, which won’t work in playgrounds.

INITIAL SETUP

Let’s start by renaming our function to be a bit more reflective of what we’ll be using it for. I’m a big fan of long, highly explanatory function and variable names:

One of the things about any recursive function, is that they can’t have a “state.” Any state needs to be brought in via the function parameters, and exported (usually via the function return –I like to avoid inout parameters). That means that this will be a complete “black box,” but, more importantly, it will be a predictable black box. What comes out will be completely reproducible, depending on what goes in.

TDD Techniques

We’ll be using some fairly basic TDD techniques in the development of this parser. I’m not a “TDD Purist.” I don’t believe that the methodology is practical or applicable in all situations, but where it can be used, I think it’s a good idea to use it. It really does result in high-quality code that has high maintainability.

A fundamental tenet of TDD, is that you start with a set of tests that fail, and then code until they pass.

Since we are using playgrounds, we don’t have access to the XCTest framework, and we’ll need to use old-fashioned print() statements that appear in the console.

So let’s set up our tests, and then we’ll get to work on the function:

We’ll work on getting the first set going.
